The Field at Garfield Park is open for Play

Brief Description: Garfield Square is a Mission District neighborhood park with a new playground, a recreation center, an indoor swimming pool, a volleyball court and a well-used, half-size, dirt playfield.

Before the renovation: Garfield Square has a bare, dusty and/or muddy field (depending on the weather). Despite being rutted and pock-marked, kids in the neighborhood use it for games, setting up homemade goals to mark the field. Children in the neighborhood call the field, “el parque donde te rompes el pie,” or “the park where you break your foot”.

The Mission’s newest athletic field! The City Fields Foundation and the Recreation and Park Department have replaced the dirt field with an artificial turf field with permanent goals, new fencing and landscaping, lights and picnic area. The field is lined for U-1p play – perfect for a neighborhood pick-up game!

"The new Garfield soccer fields are making a big difference in our neighborhood. Instead of an empty dirt lot, we have a field full of people playing ball. The soccer field has become a gathering place for our community; a place where we call come together to play together."
Jeanne Darrah, Parent & Mission resident

"I like Garfield because it's big and doesn't have a lot of holes. And it isn't dark and wet like the other places we practiced. I feel safe playing here."
Estrella Ibarra, Jamestown Cheetahs, U-10 Girls Team

More than 300 people joined City Fields and the Recreation and Park Department for a block party and ribbon-cutting ceremony inaugurating the new field. The Black Queens – the national soccer team of Ghana – helped kick-off the festivities with a demonstration and an exhibition game.
